I like to tell the almost-parents in my prenatal classes that they are about to notice that the center of the universe is about to move. When you have a baby, the center of the universe moves off it's axis, slides over about 2 feet, and drops, clunk, into a new spot. They never understand what I mean, and I know that, but when they come back for their 6 week check up, I ask them again, if they understand NOW. Their eyes get wide and they knod knowingly. THEN they understand.
I had a delivery this morning with one of my patients, and her husband commented to me that the sound of the center of the universe dropping into the new spot was still reverberating in his ears. It made me smile. He still had no clue, bless his heart, but at least he's open to the thought.
I would not want the center of my universe to be anywhere except with my children. It's really great to have a job that helps to re-arrange the center of the universe for people. Wow. I never thought of it quite that way before.
